So who are the pensioners? Marie and Shirley, of course! The good news - they get discounts on tours and they are a constant source of blogg material. Just ask Stan about the flight from Atlanta to Munich. Hehad the pleasure of sitting directly in front of Mom. When she decided to play solitaire on the touch screen on the back of Stan's seat, he felt as though he was being subjected to sub-machine gun fire to the back of his head. Thank goodness Stan is a very patient man!

Munich City Center
We arrived at our Munich Airport hotel at 8 AM local time, and Margy arrived from NJ within a half hour. The hotel was kind enough to allow us to check in early. After a nap, we rallied and bravely took the subway into Munich Center City and had a great time exploring a municipal building with a tower providing a great view of the city, St. Peter's Catholic Church, shopping at an outstanding outdoor market, having coffee at a local cafe, and eating a great calorie packed German meal before returning back to the hotel via subway.
The City Center public building had an observation tower that allowed a great birds eye view of this charming Bavarian city.
The weather is overcast and a little chilly, so we stopped for coffee pick me up at a little cafe.
Then city marketplace was busy with bicycles, cars, pedestrians, and political protesters. The historic city center included butcher shops, fresh fruits, vegatable and flowers, gift shops and restaurants.
Our German dinner was outstanding. Beer, bratwurst, roasted pig, spaetzle, sauerkraut, Bavarian pretzels, mushroom soup....you get the picture. Everything was delicious. Then it was back to our hotel on the subway. A full and fun day!

We stopped in St.Peter's Catholic Church, which as partially destroyed during WWII and was rebuilt. The church had many beautiful and interesting features, including the skeleton of a of a martyr in a glass enclosed case.

A highlight of the day was a side trip to Kaufland's in search of hair implements. The adapters and converters just weren't working, and Mom can't live without a curling iron. So we bought one flat iron, one curling brush and one curling iron for use with 220 current. The ladies will look maaaaavalous in all pictures. Our sweet young German driver, Michael, was quite amused by the shopping adventure.

And we're off!
Our journey begins in the Ham Van with Stan as our trusted limo driver. First stop - Town of Tioga to pick up Mom. Then off to the Gainesville airport.
Of course, Mom's hip set off the security alarm, and she was treated to a full body massage compliments of the TSA. Doesn't she look thrilled?
After arriving in Atlanta, we enjoyed a wonderful lunch at One Lew North followed by shopping and then snacks at the Delta Sky Club. We are well fed and ready for the long flight to Munich.

T Minus 2 Days
Many thanks to Laure Young and Steve Carson for a wonderful Bon Voyage party at their beautiful home! The food was delicious and the company outstanding! Thank you for your well wishes as we finalize our preparations for the long anticipated trip to Austria. Of course, Shirley has been packed for three weeks. Stan and I are still staying to decide what suitcases to bring, and Tori is still in Atlanta at a horse show and needs to unpack before she can repack. Mom has been pondering her packing for weeks (or maybe even months?), but in her usual generous style, she has been busy purchasing additional gifts for the Austrian relatives and will have to figure out how to get them overseas. We depart for Munich on Tuesday. Margy is flying solo on Continental Airlines and she will meet us in Munich on Wednesday. Mom, Shirley, Tori, Stan and I are traveling together - which I am sure will be a great source of blog-worthy material. Margy and Mom have been actively researching our Family Tree and Margy prepared a beautiful book to help us understand the Austrian branch of our family tree. The book, along with Mom's flash cards, will serve as a study guide, and I'm feeling a pop quiz coming our way upon arrival in Germany. I fear the need for remedial tutoring! Oops...time to go and pick out a suitcase.
